WASTE SORTING

Title: Study on quantity and content of municipal waste in City of Split (summer 2005 and winter 2006 )
Investor: Čistoća d.o.o, Put Plokita 81, Split (Municipal waste company)
Year: 2006.
Goal: Determination of quantity and contest of waste in order to develop most acceptable waste management study for analyzed region
Description:

Description of study: The sampling of waste for determination of content was performed both in summer and winter months. It started on Monday and lasted through the workweek. All parts of cities of Split, Kaštela and Solin that are covered with waste collection and whose waste is disposed on „Kerepovac“ landfill ,and waste collection performed by „Čistoća“ from Split. The sorting activities were coordinated with supervision of waste collection program and weighting of waste in order to collect most reliable data.

The determination of content was performed on waste sorting machine placed in recycling yard of landfill during summer period, in car maintenance shop in the winter period. The determination of content was performed under supervision of design engineers and municipal waste company employees. The professional work, as well as some operations during the sorting, was performed by design engineers.

The sorting of waste was performed by placing waste in sorting machine with electric rotating power motor and sieve with openings 40 millimeters in diameter. The waste smaller than 40 mm, fine waste felt down, while larger pieces of waste were sorted by hand on special table. All sorted components were weighted and recorded and at the end of sorting of samples- the total quantity was determined, as well as weight of each component. The weight percentage was calculated based on weight of sorted sample and weight of each component

The purity of material was taken into account that sorted manually. The material that causes impurities on pure materials are mostly humidity, dust and organic kitchen waste, and they mostly are present on paper, plastic bags plastic packaging, textile etc.

The following can be concluded from summer and winter sorting of waste, as well as from data provided by municipal waste company employees:

  • he highest share of municipal waste represents fine waste particle smaller than 40 mm with average mass share of 27,2%, out of which 85% is biodegradable component
  • paper and cardboard is component with second highest share (18,8%) , which is higher than expected values
  • organic waste from kitchen and garden has third highest share with 17,2% and this value is somewhat higher than average
  • the plastic share (film, hard and PET packaging) of 15,6% is higher than average values, which follows tend of increase of plastic in general waste
  • the number of organized delivery of municipal waste transported by waste collection vehicle is 1-2 a day
  • the quantity of municipal waste collected by „Ćistoća“ company from Split and disposed on „Karepovac“ landfill is estimated at 76,780 t/year, and the quantity of industrial waste collected and disposed is estimated at 12,120 t/year
? 91% of permanent residents are covered with collection of waste in observed region
? specific weight of municipal and other waste created by permanent residents in region covered by waste collection is 0,87 kg/resident/day

INVESTIGATIVE WORKS

Title: Investigative works on municipal waste landfill "Baštijunski Brig"
Investor: Grad Biograd (City goverment)
Year: 2006.
Finished
Goal: In order to remediate soil, it is necessary to conduct investigative works. The investigations are conducted both on landfill and in labs, and collected data are inputed in computer simulation in order to choose the best and most economic method of remediation. The investigations are very important since there are no hazardous waste storages in Croatia, so more than likely some of hazardous waste ended up on landfill. The investigation will determine whether the hazardous waste was disposed, in what quantities, on what locations in order to determine the best remediation method.
Description:

The landfill was on fire most of the time, so burned waste is located on landfill (ash and soil/ground that was used to put out fire). Almost all flammable part of waste was burnt. The industry was not operational or was operating with low capacity. The conducted analysis show that the quantities and characteristics of waste are different from the region to region, and they also depend on seasonality.

The determination of quantity, type and characteristics of waste is conducted in the city for some time, but chemical-physical analyses of properties are inadequate for definite conclusions. This is the reason why in analysis of certain segments experiences from analysis from developed world will be used.

Quantity, content and characteristics of waste in the future should be analyzed as part of single waste management system in the county, where some segments are already in process of implementation, while others are in preparation phase.

We will not conduct detailed analysis of waste properties, but we will only list elements from which we can predict and analyze what happen during waste burning and uncontrolled disposal. These characteristics are:

  • morphological content of waste
  • waste humidity
  • existence of certain heavy metals in the waste,

Based on last testing and calculations, it was determined those percentages of certain waste components are as follows:

paper
15

cloth
4

organic waste
30

leather
2

plastic
11

rubber
1

wood
1

glass
5

metals
2

construction material
4

hazardous waste
2

others
23

The humidity of waste was determined, and is varies from 20 to 60%, while the average was 35%

The investigation that is currently conducted shoes that in mixed municipal waste there is 1-3% of hazardous waste such as batteries, waste color, cosmetics, hospital waste etc

Measurements of air quality and hydro-sulphur quantities

The measurements and analysis of atmosphere were conducted in accordance with Air Protection Act. The general pollution parameters were automatically measured and analyzed every 10 minutes. The results of measurements show that pollution never exceeded limits allowed by law, so we expect that closest cities had 1st category quality of air. The concentration of smell of hydro-sulphurs exceeded limit of smell, so the modeling was conducted.

Geotechnical investigation

In order to conduct remediation landfill, geotechnical investigations were conducted and 3 piezometers were placed. The soil was analyzed from drill holes as well as water on Vrana Lake. The investigation revealed that under location there are mainly limestone rocks and holes filled up with clay. The water from Vrana Lake was analyzed. It was determined that underground water is not in touch with the lake water, so the remediation of the landfill can be conducted by reduction of landfill area and by construction of impermeable layer

Municipal waste analysise

STUDY OF EXISTING STATE OF WASTE MANAGEMENT

Title: Study of existing state of waste management in Slavonski Brod
Investor: Grad Slavonski Brod, Vukovarska 1, Slavonski Brod (City goverment)
Year: 2005.
Goal: Determine existing state of waste management as base on developing waste management strategy in Slavonski Brod
Description:

The determination quantities of municipal waste, waste similar to municipal waste and industrial waste in Slavonski Brod was possible from data provided by municipal waste company from Slavonski Brod, as well as from surveys and statistical data on waste quantities. The determination of waste quantities was performed for entire calendar year 2004.

The quantity of waste was determined based on data on types and number of waste transport vehicles and number of transport deliveries to the landfill

The total number of waste delivery to landfill Viljuš-JUG in 2004 was 13,245. It is estimated that about 13,177 tones of waste was created, and 12,954 tones of this waste was created by local residents.

Based on this data, the specific quantity per resident in the area covered by waste collection was determined:

Specific quantity= 12.954 tones x 1.000/(55.320 residents x 365 days) = 0,642 kg/resident/day

The estimated specific quantity is among average quantities. We expect that specific quantity will rise due to increase in standard of living.

It is also estimated that about 4,425 tones of nonhazardous industrial waste was generated and dumped to this landfill Some companies create smaller quantities of hazardous industrial waste, which they store inside the company and turnover to authorized companies for handling hazardous waste.

The total estimated quantity of waste generated in 2004 is

  municipal waste
13.177 t

  • industrial nonhazarodus waste
4.425 t

The estimate does not include construction waste that is not collected by municipal waste companies.

The calculation of available space on landfill location proves the following:
The value of cumulative values of waste in 2010,without settlement, recycling and cover material, of about 160,500 m3, will be smaller for settlement intensity under influence if the weight of upper layers on lower layers where microbiological decomposition is performed, but also with activities tied to waste recycling. In this case, the total cumulative quantity of waste is 151,000. The 25% for cover material should be added to this quantity.

Theoretically, the needed area of base for municipal waste dumping, whose volume is about 189,000 m3 assuming compression value of 0,75 t/m3, is about 55000 m2. The available volume of location is about 190,000 m3, which means that area used for remediation and continued use is sufficient for next 5 years.

This location will be used for waste dumping until end of 2010, by when the regional waste management centre should be constructed. After its construction, this landfill will be closed when 1st category landfill and will take over function as a recycling yard, transfer station or 2nd category landfill. All generated waste after that will be disposed on regional landfill.
