REMEDIATION OF FORMER LANDFILL IN BJELOVAR – GRGINEC

SUMMARY

The remediation of landfill has become priority in Croatia. Therefore, City of Bjelovar started remediation of former landfill “Grginec”. During the design of remediation of process, the existing conditions were noted and verified, and during research of existing state number of analysis were performed including: hydro geological, geomechanical, surveying, survey of people working on landfill and research in paper records/archives. The waste was collected here from 1970 to 1990. The municipal and technological waste was dumped here, and about 180,000 tones of waste were disposed here. The water from landfill discharges to agricultural area and creek. There were other possible ways of environmental pollution: through water, air or soil. The design of remediation was based on research results. The proposed solution included closing of top layer with impermeable hydraulic barrier on the top and development of drainage at the bottom of landfill.
